New York Blood Center (NYBC) presented the Second Milstein Cord Blood Symposium on April 10 at NYBC’s Murray Sargent Auditorium. The symposium – and an opening reception on April 9 at the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History hosted by NYBC Chairman Howard P. Milstein – also celebrated the FDA’s recent approval of HEMACORD™, a cellular therapy product developed and manufactured by the Howard P. Milstein National Cord Blood Center. More than 200 scientists, doctors, and professionals in the medical community attended the symposium.
Howard Milstein was interviewed by Leaders, a magazine that presents the broad range of leadership thoughts and visions of the world’s most influential people, about the Howard and Abby Milstein Foundation and his work in philanthropy. In the interview, Howard explains his belief in public-private partnerships to solve intractable problems in health and civic life and his unique approach to philanthropy, which brings aspects of venture capitalism to the organizations he leads and sponsors.
Paul Milstein Hall of Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning (AAP) was the focus of a weekend celebration by alumni, faculty, and students in early March to mark the building’s completion. The highlight of the weekend was a talk on March 9 by internationally renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, who designed Milstein Hall with his Office of Metropolitan Architecture. AAP Dean Kent Kleinman introduced Koolhaas and moderated a Q&A for a capacity audience of nearly 300 in the Abby and Howard Milstein Auditorium and Boardroom.

On October 31, 2011, the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) inaugurated the new Milstein Center for Interreligious Dialogue (MCID) with a lunch for leaders of the Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant communities. His Eminence Kurt Cardinal Koch was the guest of honor. Cardinal Koch is president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, which includes the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews.
On October 25, 2011, the American Skin Association (ASA) honored a leading group of physicians and scientists at its 14th Annual Gala. The distinguished researchers have made groundbreaking discoveries and significant contributions in the field of dermatology and the treatment of skin cancer. Journalist Deborah Norville received the organization’s Education Award.
